The Wairarapa Chamber of Commerce, supporting the local business community

Meet the Board

Laurence Cheetham - Yard 107

The Wairarapa is a great place to live.

Our family settled at Mangamahoe near Mt. Bruce, and others were retail traders in Carterton.

My twenty five years farming commitment has included sheep and beef, poultry production, and now importing and exporting alpacas. This experience has been interrupted by overseas travel, a stint in Wellington working in stockbroking, and attaining a Certificate in Small Business Management.

As Past President of the Wairarapa Ski Club and former Chair of the Opaki School Board of Trustees I encouraged sound, progressive and inclusive governance.

I now manage Yard107, a commercial property providing Yard, Shed, and Office space for rural support businesses, involved with energy and fertilizer distribution; and forestry, farming and infrastructure machinery maintenance.
Let’s encourage growth in the Wairarapa economy utilising our strengths of people, land, and proximity to Wellington city.

Lucy Cruickshank - Pure Wairarapa

The Chamber of Commerce is a vital network in the Wairarapa community as evidenced by the large array of business entrepreneurs who are members.

As a business owner, I have found the Chamber support and contacts to be highly instrumental in the establishment of my new venture, Pure Wairarapa Ltd - a global sales and marketing agency for premium local food and beverages. The Chamber events and training provide inspiration and encouragement throughout the year.

In my capacity as a board member, I’m passionate about promoting the Chamber to other businesses and entrepreneurs, particularly in the agri - food and beverage sectors and I am delighted to be an active stakeholder in the economic future of our region.

Andrew Denholm - Wairarapa Times Age

Born, raised and educated in the Wairarapa I have returned to the region to head the Wairarapa Times Age. I have successfully operated a real estate publishing business in the region for the last 4.5 years and relish the challenge of running a wider newspaper business. I'm excited to bring my young family to Masterton and look forward to positively promoting business and enterprise for the betterment of the community and region. 2011 will be an exciting year for the Wairarapa and I'm looking forward to leveraging all opportunities for businesses and the wider community.

Hamish Edwards - Xero

As a relatively new resident in the Wairarapa, I wish to help the local business community in a way that makes the most sense.  The Wairarapa Chamber of Commerce is the leading business network for the region and as such is where I feel I can be of most help.

I have enjoyed getting to know Steph and admire her enthusiasm and committment to the cause.  I support the clear strategy to connect business together to share ideas and build a stronger local economy.  By doing this we will provide sustainable growth and provide to the people living and working in the Wairarapa with a wonderful place to be.

There will always be challenges to business growth, be they central or local governemnt change, HR, macro economic and even apathy.  I will be an enthusiastic advocate for business in the Wairarapa and will fight hard to see the interests of the good honest Wairarapa business people heard so we can ensure prosperity.

I eagerly look forward to rolling my sleeves up and getting stuck in.

Head of Business Development for Oppenheim Investment Managers.
Tim was born and bred in the Wairarapa and attended Wairarapa

back to his hometown and manage the Masterton store. In October
2008 Stephen brought the store and began building up the business
presence of Vodafone in the Wairarapa which had previously not
been tapped into.

Wendy Morrison - Westpac Banking Corporation

I have recently re-joined Westpac as their Business Manager covering the Wairarapa after two years as the General Manager for the local newspaper, The Wairarapa Times Age.

I chose to stay working locally following my role with the newspaper as I wished to continue to work in and contribute to the wider Wairarapa region.  I have 18 years banking experience which includes various roles inclusive of senior leadership, based in either Wellington or Auckland and in 2008 completed an 18 month Corporate Leadership programme via the University of Auckland Business School.

I have a strong appreciation of the diverse and amazing opportunities that the Wairarapa has to offer, am proud to live in the Wairarapa and contribute towards the growth and economic development of the area.  My current role allows me to work with local businesses to support their growth and profitability.

Derek Roberts - Tomlinson & Carruthers Surveyors Ltd

Otago to gain qualifications in the Surveying and Engineering
business. I moved to the Wairarapa as a surveyor in 1995.

I joined Tomlinson & Carruthers in 2002 bringing an extensive skills base.
I work my best on a wide variety of projects ranging from large scale
public works to residential subdivisions. As Wairarapa's oldest, largest
and only locally-owned surveying and land development firm, Tomlinson
& Carruthers recognises the importance of local knowledge and
community involvement.

I am married to Elsie and we have three children aged from 3 to 8 years old. I especially enjoy the Wairarapa lifestyle the region provides for my young family. I have represented New Zealand at waterskiing and enjoy other activities such as aviation, off road touring and home improvements.

France signing parts for F-16 and Airbus A330/A340 aircraft.

In 1994, John and his Danish family (two children) moved to Sonderborg in
the south of Denmark where John worked as a senior engineer at JF Farm Machines.

While in Denmark, John completed a diploma in Business Administration,
majoring in Strategy and Organisation.

John returned to New Zealand in 1999, to take over the family-owned
farm machinery business, based in Masterton.

“I joined the Chamber of Commerce to help promote business
development in the Wairarapa. We need to celebrate successful
businesses, make new business easier by removing barriers, and
attract the right people to come and live in the best region in
New Zealand.”

Colin Wright - CEO - Carterton District Council

I am currently the Chief Executive Officer for the Carterton District Council.

While it may be unusual for a local government person to be involved with
the Chamber, I have agreed to be nominated as I consider it very
important for councils to be seen as encouraging our local businesses.
