The Trust is a non-profit organisation registered under the Charities Act and is governed by it's own Act of Parliament(originally the Greytown Trust Act 1871).
The Trust has its origins in the Small Farms Settlement Association, set up in 1853 to provide land either by sale or lease to new residents to build houses.
The activity of the trust has changed over the years and it owns and manages residential and commercial property in Wairarapa,Hawke's Bay and Wanganui. Residential properties are now a relatively small component of the portfolio as good quality, single tenant commercial buildings are acquired. The Trust is continuing to expand it's commercial portfolio and is currently embarking on purchasing more properties.
All profits are distributed back into the community through tertiary grants, bulk funding of schools, individuals and local community organisations.
The Trust is held for the general wellbeing of the local community including establishing, assisting educational facilities, libraries, public utilities as well as helping individuals gain knowledge and skills in the arts, science, technical subjects, literature and physical activities. The Trust over the last three years has made grants exceeding $1.1million.
